Rigara Reconstruction

1926, The Senghenydd Crate

PAINSTAKING DOCUMENTATION

Throughout the 1926 archaeological excavation, Fox made extensive sketches on single sheets of paper that were stored folded within his notebook. In some of these drawings Fox documented the precise layout of the dig site. In others, he sought to reconstruct the appearance "Rigara" animal and the historical layout of the site.

TWO LEGS OR FOUR?

In the striking series of images on this page, Sir Cyril deploys a suprising skill in draughtsmanship to explore several variant interpretations for the Rigara's appearance, including both a bipedal and quadrapedal form. In other areas of the sketch, Fox explores possible locations of the eye, and viable configurations of the front paw.
